    Happy New Year!  We hope you had a great holiday and start into the New Year.  I'm really looking forward to the new year, as we have a lot of exciting things planned here at DGG for 2010.  So be sure to keep your eyes on us throughout the year. 

   Last month I introduced myself to our newsletter readers.  If you missed last month's newsletter, let me quickly recap my role here at DGG.   My name is Cheryl Capwell and I am DGG's Marketing Director.  Last year I put together these newsletters every month in conjunction with Gary, President of DGG, from behind-the-scenes and kept you up to date on what is happening at DGG and the tactical world.  Last month I took over the newsletter and plan to continue bringing you the same great information throughout the year as well as include the "Training Corner", a section that will be written by Gary specifically for each issue.

 Training Corner -Jan '10 Edition
Doing the TASER data download! by Gary Meares
Each month I like to do a short piece on some aspect of TASER use within an agency. Remember the TASER is not a "fire and forget" type program. A successful TASER program involves care and maintenance. Someone within your agency (preferably a TASER Master Instructor) is overseeing the program and tending to the needs of the program.
You can not just issue the TASER out and hope for the best. One aspect we encourage is ensuring each agency does an annual data download of the TASER. Preferably a semi annual is better but an annual will work just as well. Why do an annual data download? Several reasons.
1- It lets you know the TASER clock is set correctly and you have selected daylight savings if necessary.
2-You can determine if the data on the download is accurate.
3- Should you have a corrupt unit, better to find out now than when you need the data for a legal question
4- It gives you a chance to service the TASER and ensure the owner is performing any agency required maintenance, such as a daily spark test.
5- Does the TASER (X-26) have the most up to date software loaded?
6- Allows you to check the warranty expiration on any X-26 purchased prior to May of 2009. (Up to that point the warranty was sold in the battery, after May the warranty starts at time     of purchase)
Doing an annual TASER data download is not as complicated as you might think. Here is an easy way to get it done. When your agency has a scheduled in-service training day, say defensive tactics or range time, ask all your attending personnel to bring their TASER to the training. Have a table set up with a laptop computer near where the training will take place.  As the students come in for training, have them drop off their TASER. The best way to ensure the TASER goes back to the correct owner at the end of the process is to have a roll of masking tape handy. Place a strip of tape on the handle of the TASER and write the students last name on it. This is a much easier system than doing it by the TASER serial number. Some agencies print out a sheet of labels with agency members names on it to affix to the TASER. Either way works fine.
While the students are completing the regular scheduled in-service training, you and perhaps your team are downloading the TASERS and performing the steps listed above. I like to see agencies keep a copy of the download. You can print it out or save to a disk or hard drive. For me it always stayed with the training files. Should you find a unit that is not performing correctly you can take measures to remedy the problem or RMA the unit back to TASER International for a fix. Now I understand that for larger agencies you will probably want several laptops and some help, plus you will need a download cable for each laptop.
That is basically how you do it and we really encourage each agency with a TASER program to perform at least one annual download. As always we are here to help with any questions. Your TASER program will be as successful as you want it to be, but it does require some effort.
